Many procurement managers mistakenly use hand magnets to test if a clamp is high-quality stainless steel, assuming that magnetic attraction indicates poor quality. In reality, the opposite is true.
Our hose clamps are made of premium Austenitic Stainless Steel (grades 201, 301, 304, and 316). While these alloys are non-magnetic in their soft, annealed state, they undergo cold rolling and stamping processes to achieve the tensile strength required for hose clamps. This cold working induces a partial phase transformation into martensite, generating magnetic properties. Without this cold-work hardening, the steel would lack the strength to withstand high-torque tightening.
In worm drive hose clamps, friction between the screw threads and the band slots directly affects torque conversion. For carbon steel screws, a zinc-plated surface acts as a dry lubricant, reducing wear and maximizing clamping force.
For stainless steel screws where plating is omitted, applying specialized wax compounds is necessary. However, exposure to harsh environmental conditions or heat during transport can degrade these waxes, increasing friction and reducing installation torque efficiency. Therefore, we recommend zinc plating for carbon steel screws to ensure consistent performance.
