Demystifying Magnetism

Austenitic stainless steels (201, 301, 304, 316) are non-magnetic when soft-annealed. However, cold working changes their structural layout, creating slight magnetism. Using standard magnets to assess material grade is invalid; strength and hardness depend on this cold rolling change.

Screw Lubrication Mechanics

How do you determine the correct clamp size and torque for high-pressure hydraulic hoses?
To determine the correct clamp size, measure the hose's outer diameter (OD) after it is pushed onto the fitting or coupling. The clamp's adjustment range must wrap this OD, ideally placing the final size in the middle of the range. For torque, refer to the material grade (W1 through W5) and band width. For instance, heavy-duty T-bolt clamps (typically 19mm or 24mm wide) can handle higher torque (up to 15-20 Nm for M8 bolts) than standard worm-gear clamps, which can fail if over-torqued.
