Understanding Magnetism in Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steels (SS201, SS301, SS304, SS316) are non-magnetic in their fully annealed state. However, to meet the tensile strength and hardness requirements of high-pressure clamps, these materials undergo cold rolling deformation. This mechanical forming process transforms part of the austenite phase into martensite, introducing magnetic properties. Therefore, the presence of magnetism indicates cold-working strength, rather than poor raw material grade.

Fastener Lubrication & Anti-Galling

Stainless steel fasteners are prone to thread galling (cold welding) during assembly. Thread lubrication is essential. Carbon steel bolts are usually electro-galvanized, which provides inherent lubrication. For stainless steel threads, dry-wax coatings are applied.
