A common misconception among purchasing managers is that if a stainless steel hose clamp attracts a magnet, it is of low quality or impure. In metallurgy, the opposite is often true. High-strength industrial clamps are fabricated from austenitic grades such as 201, 301, 304 (W4), or 316 (W5). While these materials are non-magnetic in their annealed state, the raw steel must undergo severe cold rolling and stamping processes to achieve the tensile strength required for high-torque applications.
This deformation induces a phase transformation in the crystal lattice from austenite to martensite, which naturally generates magnetic properties. Annealing the clamp to remove the magnetism would soften the steel, rendering the clamp unable to maintain high radial clamping force. Therefore, localized magnetic attraction is a physical characteristic of cold-formed high-strength clamps.
During the tightening of a stainless steel clamp, contact pressures between the screw threads and the housing can lead to thread galling, causing the clamp to seize before reaching full torque.
