Most industrial clamps are forged using different grades of stainless steel (like 201, 301, 304, and 316). A common misconception during quality inspection is using magnets to check material quality under the assumption that if it's magnetic, it is inferior steel.
In reality, the opposite is true. Magnetism in austenitic stainless steel clamps is a byproduct of the cold rolling process. To achieve the high hardness and tensile strength values required to maintain radial load, the soft raw material must be rolled thin. This cold-work deformation induces a partial phase transformation from austenite to martensite, creating a magnetic signature. Heat-treated steel can be rendered fully non-magnetic, but it will lack the hardness and spring characteristics needed for high-pressure industrial clamping applications.
