A common field misconception is using handheld magnets to evaluate stainless steel grades. It is often incorrectly assumed that magnetic pull indicates substandard metal.
In reality, while raw austenitic alloys (SUS304, SUS316) are non-magnetic in their annealed state, the high-torque configurations of hose clamps require cold-working. The heavy cold rolling process transforms a portion of the austenite phase to martensite, which increases tensile strength and introduces magnetic properties.
Thread lubrication directly influences the installation torque-to-tension relationship. On carbon steel screws (typical in W1/W2 specifications), the electro-galvanized coating acts as a sacrificial layer and solid lubricant, preventing galling.
When using unplated stainless steel fasteners, we apply a synthetic wax compound. Because temperature variations and long-term storage can degrade surface wax, electro-galvanized carbon steel screws are often recommended to maintain stable friction coefficients under high torque.
For high-vibration charge air cooler (CAC) and heavy diesel coolant systems, standard clamps cannot adjust for thermal expansion and contraction. We integrate heavy-duty Belleville or helical springs to dynamic T-bolt clamps.
During installation, care must be taken to avoid fully compressing the spring. If bottomed out, the spring acts as a solid spacer, losing its ability to absorb thermal expansion. This can cause joint failure or damage the underlying hose.
