A common misconception is that quality stainless steel must not attract magnets. In reality, while austenitic raw materials (like SS304 or SS316) are non-magnetic in their soft states, they must undergo heavy cold working to achieve the hardness and tensile strength required for hose clamps. This process converts some austenite to martensite, giving high-performance clamps a slight magnetic pull.
Friction between the screw thread and the band housing can cause thread galling, which reduces the effective clamping force. Zinc plating on carbon steel screws provides natural lubrication. For unplated stainless steel screws, wax coatings are used. However, because wax can degrade in hot or harsh shipping environments, galvanized steel screws are often the most reliable choice.
