A common misconception is that if a stainless steel clamp exhibits magnetism, the material quality is inferior. In reality, the raw materials used (such as austenitic grades 201, 301, 304, and 316) are non-magnetic in their annealed state. However, to achieve the necessary tensile strength and yield point for industrial clamp bands, the material must undergo cold rolling. This cold working transforms a portion of the austenite phase into deformation-induced martensite, which introduces magnetic properties. Consequently, magnetism is a structural indicator of high cold-work hardening, which is necessary to prevent band stretching under tension.
For worm drive and heavy-duty clamps, the coefficient of friction within the thread pairing determines how much applied installation torque is converted into band tension. Mika Pipeline utilizes a specialized zinc-plated galvanized layer on carbon steel screws to serve as a dry-film lubricant. In cases where non-galvanized configurations are required, we apply a compound wax lubricant. However, because wax compounds can dry out or degrade during shipping and storage, we recommend galvanized steel screws to maintain consistent installation torque-to-tension transfer.
In high-temperature systems, such as turbocharger outlets or heavy vehicle coolant systems, joint diameters experience significant thermal expansion and contraction. Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps address this by using Belleville spring washers to store elastic energy. During installation, the spring must not be fully compressed (bottomed out). If compressed solid, the spring can no longer flex to accommodate thermal expansion, resulting in high joint pressure that can damage the hose and lead to premature failure.

Material selection depends on the operating environment. For general indoor applications with low humidity, W1 galvanized steel is cost-effective. For automotive engine bays and typical industrial assembly lines, W2 or W4 (304 Stainless Steel) is recommended to prevent atmospheric corrosion. For chemical processing, marine exposure, or high-acid settings, specify W5 (316 Stainless Steel) to resist pitting and crevice corrosion.
