Selecting and installing fluid adaptors requires a solid understanding of metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Below, our engineering team highlights three common misconceptions in pipeline maintenance and component selection.
A common but incorrect belief is that if a magnet sticks to a stainless steel clamp, the material is cheap or prone to rust. In reality, the opposite is often true.
Standard sanitary clamps are made from austenitic stainless steels (such as 201, 301, 304, or 316). In their annealed state, these steels are completely non-magnetic. However, to achieve the tensile strength required to hold high-pressure lines, the raw metal must undergo cold rolling.
This cold-working process physically alters the alloy's crystalline structure, transforming some of the austenite into martensite, which is naturally magnetic. Therefore, mild magnetism in a finished Tri Clamp adapter simply indicates that the steel was cold-rolled to achieve the hardness and tensile strength necessary for secure industrial connections.
To prevent thread galling—a common issue where mating threads seize under pressure—screws must be properly lubricated. On carbon steel screws (such as those used in DIN3017 clamps), the zinc-plated galvanized layer acts as a dry lubricant, reducing friction during installation.
For applications where zinc plating is not preferred, synthetic wax compounds are applied to the threads. However, wax coatings can dry out, degrade during long-term storage, or wash away in harsh cleaning environments. For most general industrial applications, our engineering team recommends using galvanized steel screws to ensure consistent tightening torque and prevent thread binding.
Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps are designed to maintain constant sealing pressure on hoses that undergo thermal expansion and contraction (such as coolant and intake lines in heavy trucks). The integrated spring compresses and expands to compensate for changes in temperature.
When installing these clamps, it is critical not to tighten the nut until the spring is completely flattened. If the spring is fully compressed, it can no longer flex to absorb thermal expansion.
