Raw Material Magnetism

Technical Myth

Many procurement agents use permanent magnets to test stainless steel quality, assuming that magnetism indicates inferior materials or high carbon impurities. This is scientifically incorrect.

While raw austenitic alloys (201, 301, 304, 316) are non-magnetic after hot annealing, hose clamp production requires high tensile strength and band hardness. These mechanical properties are achieved via cold reduction/rolling. This process alters the grain structures of the alloy, transforming a portion of the austenite phase to a ferromagnetic martensite phase. Thus, magnetic properties in a cold-worked band indicate proper tensile strength and hardening, not poor alloy composition.

Lubrication Screws & Zinc Plating

Thread friction coefficient directly affects clamping torque transmission efficiency. The electro-galvanized layer on carbon steel screws acts as a structural boundary lubricant. When stainless steel screws are specified without lubrication, they are susceptible to thread galling, which can lock the worm gear before achieving appropriate seating tension.

If zinc plating must be omitted to satisfy specific corrosion requirements, we apply dry organic wax coatings. However, because temperature variations and handling can degrade wax over time, we recommend using galvanized screws (under DIN3017 specifications) to maintain optimal torque delivery.

Spring-Loaded T-Bolt Physics

T-bolt clamps equipped with Belleville spring stacks are essential for charge air cooler systems and coolant circuits subject to high thermal expansion cycles. The spring stack must never be fully compressed (bottomed out) during installation.

Raw Material Verification Process

We source our steel coils from leading domestic steel mills. After each batch of raw material arrives, our quality team inspects the materials for chemistry, hardness, tensile strength, and dimension parameters. Only qualified material lots are accepted into the raw materials warehouse for manufacturing.

What is the difference between W1, W2, W4, and W5 materials in Germany type hose clamps?
These designations refer to the material compositions specified under the DIN 3017 standard:
  • W1: All components (band, housing, and screw) are zinc-plated carbon steel. Best for indoor, low-corrosion applications.
  • W2: The band and housing are stainless steel (such as AISI 201 or 304), while the screw is zinc-plated carbon steel. Offers a balance of corrosion resistance and thread torque performance.
  • W4: All parts are made of AISI 304 (A2) stainless steel. This is the industry standard for general outdoor, automotive, and industrial uses.
  • W5: All parts are made of AISI 316 (A4) marine-grade stainless steel. This grade provides high resistance to chlorides and acids, making it suitable for marine, naval, and chemical processing environments.
Why do some stainless steel clamps exhibit magnetic properties?
Austenitic stainless steel alloys (like 301, 304, and 316) are structurally non-magnetic when annealed. However, during the cold-rolling process used to make high-strength band material, the mechanical stress induces a partial phase transformation from austenite to martensite. Martensite is magnetic. This transformation is necessary to achieve the tensile strength required for high-torque hose clamps. Magnetism in these clamps is a normal result of the manufacturing process, not an indicator of low-grade steel.
Why does Mika recommend galvanized screws in heavy-duty carbon steel clamps?
The zinc-plated layer on carbon steel screws serves two purposes. First, it protects against oxidation. Second, it acts as a thread lubricant, reducing friction during installation. Lower friction allows a higher proportion of the applied torque to be converted into tension in the clamp band, helping to prevent premature joint locking and thread galling.
What is the correct installation procedure for spring-loaded T-bolt clamps?
Belleville washers or spring assemblies are designed to expand and contract dynamically in response to temperature cycles, maintaining a constant seal tension. During installation, the spring must not be fully compressed. Compressing the spring completely removes its ability to expand and contract, turning the assembly into a rigid clamp. This can cause over-compression and hose failure during temperature spikes.
