Most industrial clamps are produced from austenitic stainless steel grades (e.g., AISI 201, 301, 304, 316). A common misconception is that if a magnet attracts the material, the stainless steel quality is inferior.
In reality, the cold-rolling process used to reduce strip thickness and increase tensile strength alters the steel’s microstructure, transforming some austenite into martensite. This transformation induces magnetic properties. High-quality clamp bands must retain high hardness and tensile strength to handle high tightening torques, meaning a degree of magnetic attraction is normal and indicates robust cold-working.
Screw lubrication is vital for converting tightening torque into radial clamping force. On carbon steel screws, the zinc plating acts as a dry lubricant, reducing thread friction.
For stainless steel screws, special wax compounds are applied to prevent galling. During storage and transport, exposure to extreme heat can dry out or degrade these wax coatings, leading to increased friction and lower clamping force at the same input torque. Therefore, carbon steel screws with zinc plating are often recommended for demanding applications to ensure consistent friction coefficients.
Heavy-duty trucks and charge-air systems undergo significant thermal cycling. Under high heat, silicone hoses soften and expand, and when they cool, they contract. Standard T-bolt clamps can compress the hose too tightly during expansion, causing cold leaks once the system cools.
Spring-loaded T-bolt clamps resolve this by absorbing thermal expansion through spring compression. When installing these clamps, the spring must not be fully compressed.
